About The Artist
Jayne Armstrong lives and works in Brittany, France where she creates sculptural and functional works in wood. Jayne works in a range of different woods but is best known for her pieces turned on a lathe from freshly cut green oak. Working green enables Jayne to explore the sculptural and aesthetic possibilities of a material that moves and changes shape as it dries; it is a process that continually fascinates. These pieces are turned to no more than a few millimeters in thickness before being left to dry and take their form naturally. Once dry, Jayne bleaches, stains, burns, embellishes, oils, and waxes to create work that is as light as a feather and soft to the touch.
In addition to working in green oak, Jayne also works in seasoned wood to create unique and distinctive functional vessels and platters. Whether from green or seasoned wood, each piece starts life on a woodturning lathe and then maybe further sculpted, dyed, scorched, and variously finished to exploit the intrinsic beauty of the wood.
Importantly for Jayne, the wood is sourced locally. Much of the oak will come from her own garden which she cuts and chainsaws herself. Other sources are friends, neighbours, and the local arboriculteur. Worked in this way, each piece of wood has a story rooted in time and place. For Jayne, they are objects that matter
